What is success? On a simpler note, success is the attainment of wealth, position, honors or the like. But is that all there is in success or are there more? After all, to attain wealth or power, one must have qualities in him that can mold him to become successful such as patience, perseverance and determination. True success can be attained as long as one builds a good relationship with others or co-workers, earns their respect and learns to appreciate his work.
We often perceive the word success to be the same as money. As long as we have lots of money, live in a mansion and so on, we are successful. Because of this, we tend to be selfish and focus on earning money, thinking that once we have it, it will bring happiness in our lives. But we forget that not everything can be bought with money. As the saying goes, “Money cannot buy happiness.” Money is not the only factor to consider in order to determine whether we are successful or not. First, we need to appreciate our work. As long as we do not appreciate our work and persevere, we will never be successful. Without qualities like patience, and determination, we can never truly be successful.
At times, success is associated with fame and popularity. But being successful does not necessarily mean that you are famous or popular. Anyone can become famous as long as he or she believes in himself or herself and has the confidence to do what he or she likes. Another would be having the right connections and having enough publicity. Although there are successful people who are famous and popular, they did not become successful because their fame or popularity. They worked hard to be where they are right now and in the process, built relationships with others. They did not just expect their success to be handed down onto them; instead, they used their talents to start up their own business.
One of the reasons that led us to believe that success is money is media. Media has influenced us into thinking that being famous and rich means success. Because of their advertisements which show the success of celebrities, we tend to think that actors and actresses are the only ones successful. And seeing them on screen looking so happy makes us believe that money is happiness. As a result, we live selfish live thinking of nothing else but money. Although, there are those who attained success through hard work and determination, they earned the respect of their co-workers, gained new insights and built relationships that last a lifetime. Being truly successful mean that they can live better lives and they would no longer worry over their debts or loans- success means achieving you goals and being proud of yourself for being able to reach that goal. By attaining success, one can be content with life and be happy living his or her life.
Building a good relationship with co-workers, earning their respect and appreciating one’s own work can lead the path to attain true success. As the saying goes, “We don’t grow unless we take risks. Any successful company is riddled with failures.” Therefore, we should learn to be patient and try to exhibit the traits that make a person successful. After all, it is innate to man to be patient, persevering and determined. They just need the motivation to work on it to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.

Reflective Essay 2
Before having this Englcom class, my English has always been average. I can read and write in English but not as fluent as I am right now.
Through this class, I was able to improve on my vocabulary and I am able to write essays that have more meaning as compared to the essays I have written before. I learned the different types of essays and was able to improve on them. I have always though that this class would be difficult because it would challenge my English. It proved to be difficult but at the same time it felt goof to be able to accomplish the essay writings that was required. I believe that this class has helped me to be more fluent in English. Also, it has helped me achieve my goals of improving my English, not only in writing essays but also in understanding what I am writing. It has helped me improve my reading and listening skills as well.

Argumentative Essay - Beauty Pageants - Exploitative?
A beauty pageant is a competition that is based solely on physical attributes but often includes talent, personality and question and answer portions. Most beauty pageants are made for women especially young girls at the age of five. Although beauty pageants are seemingly harmless and just provokes the competitive side of women, it should not be welcomed to young girls at age ten and below because (a) beauty pageants set their own definition of what is beautiful, (b) it may affect their future outlook in life, and (c) it is a form of abuse to young girls.
Even though most beauty pageants are for women and is a competition on physical appearance, it is difficult to join one especially since they have their own definition of what is beautiful. Most of us look not only on the outer beauty of people but also on the inner beauty. In beauty pageants, what is important is your outer beauty. They give more importance on how you look in a dress and how well you can carry yourself. This can be a setback to young girls wanting to join beauty pageants because in a way, these pageants are discriminatory to others. To be able to join a pageant you must first meet their requirements such as having the right height and weight, having the right size of body and most of all having a beautiful face. Aside from these, you must also be the right age. The most common of all pageants are the ones for young girls wherein they need to wear sparkly clothes just to attract the attention of many.
Children who are aspiring beauty queens tend to be pressured by their parents. According to the article entitled, “The child beauty-pageant queens who grew up” (2008), mothers hire make-up artists just to apply make-up on their daughter’s faces. And these girls cannot do anything about it because it is their parent’s will. During these events, young girls are criticized by judges as they get on stage wearing skimpy clothes, shaking their butts while making kissy faces (Frazier, 2009). Another is that rather than basing their judgments on the girl’s capabilities, they value more what the girls look like. As a result, young girls will ten to believe that it is right to judge others – to think of them as objects who can be criticized by their personality or what they wear. Thus, it may have an effect on how they will perceive other people. Instead of looking at what is on the inside, like their personality or attitude, they will look at what is on the outside. Young girls will have the same perception of what is beautiful and think that they, too, are capable of criticizing others based on their appearance.

Cause and Effect Essay - Cause of Low Standard of Education in the Philippines
Education is a privilege that most Filipinos have. Being able to attend a prestigious school can be beneficial for our future. It can have many different implications in our lives, especially when we are looking for a job. Most of the time, companies look for graduate students who have degrees in specific areas to work for them. But there are times wherein some Filipinos cannot find a good job because they do not have college degrees. Bearing this in mind, this essay will explain further the causes of low standard of education in the Philippines, which are due to child labor, lack of teachers, and the poor allocation of the government to educational funds.
The first reason why the standard of education in the Philippines is low is because of child labor. It was found in previous studies that around sixteen percent of children ages five to seventeen are already working (“Child Labor in the Philippines”). Children are forced by their parents to work at a very young age without thinking twice if this may affect the future of their children. They tend to force their children to work just to earn money and to be able to buy their necessities. According to the article “Child Labor in the Philippines”, most children are working in various sectors and occupations. This includes working in plantations or working as a domestic servant. As a result, children spend most of their time earning a living instead of learning in classrooms.
The second reason why the standard of education in the Philippines is low is because of the lack of professional teachers. According to Ramota (2005) there is an employment crisis in our country in terms of low salary and unrealistic professional regulation policies that affects the education profession. The salaries of the teachers remain the same from the year 2001 to the year 2005. The salary of the teacher is not enough to sustain him/her and it does not correspond with the service that he/she provides. Teachers have an average of one thousand one hundred seventy-six hours of work per year and they teach over fifty students per class. Therefore, teachers prefer to migrate to other countries where their services will be appreciated and given the proper salary. At times, teachers remain in the country but end up working as a housemaid. As a result, the decline in education is more imminent.
The last reason why the standard of education in the Philippines is low is because of the poor allocation of the government to educational funds. Instead of prioritizing the education of the Filipino youth, they allot more funds to the travels that the president made. According to “Around the World in Eight Days”, the report that shows the travel expense of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo amounted to six hundred ninety-three million, which is higher than the budgetary allocation for education. If this continues, more and more Filipinos will lose the chance to attain the education they deserve especially sine we are going through an economic crisis. The government should have focused more on the implications of the economic crisis and allotted the funds to better programs that will help the country recover form difficult times. As Chiz Escudero said “The times call for judicious use of the government’s dwindling resources.” As our resources are dwindling away, we should use it wisely and make sure that it will be beneficial to all.
Child labor, lack of teachers and poor allocation of the government to educational funds are some of the causes of the low standard of education in the Philippines. Therefore, we should learn to value our education since it is one of the things that will help us have a better future. Getting a quality education entails us a better job.

Comparison and Contrast Essay - Chocolate Chip Cookie or Oatmeal Cookie
We humans love to eat food. As a matter of fact, there are times where we tend to eat more than two meals a day. We eat snacks just to satisfy our hunger. But the snacks that we eat are not the usual rice meals that we eat for lunch. One of the most common snacks that we love to eat are cookies. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the differences between chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies in terms of ingredients, health benefits and taste.
One of the differences between chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies is their ingredients. Chocolate chip cookies’ main ingredient is the chocolate chip present. At times, it may also include nuts. As for the oatmeal cookies, it contains oats and may include peanut butter or cinnamon. The amount of the ingredients may affect its crispiness. While for oatmeal cookies, the thickness dictates if the cookie is chewable or crispy.
From the ingredients, we can see another difference between the two kinds of cookies – health benefits. The health benefits of chocolate chip cookies lie on the chocolate chips present. In accordance to the article Health and Chocolate (N.D.), during ancient times, chocolate was thought to contain mood-enhancing properties and it is an energy giving food. Up until now, research has been made and it was proven that dark chocolates and cocoa can help in blood circulation and it can be good for our hearts. It can also reduce the risks of heart disease and the oats found in the oatmeal cookies give the body a regular dose of vitamin B that can address serious health problems such as memory impairment and cognition deficit.
Lastly, the main difference is in their taste. Chocolate chip cookies tend to be sweeter as compared to oatmeal cookies since they contain higher amounts of ingredients. For oatmeal cookies, you can use wheat flour and instead of using butter, you can use margarine that can lessen the sweetness of the cookie.
Even though chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies differ in some ways, they still have some similarities. For one thing, all cookies are considered as an after-school snack no matter what kind it is. Static-Descriptive Essay - My Eighteenth Birthday
As I prepared myself for dinner, I could not help but feel anxious of what would happen. This was the first time we would go to a hotel to eat dinner and celebrate my birthday. I remember wearing jeans and a shirt to match but then changed into a silky magenta dress because my mom and sister told me to dress nicely.
We left the house immediately after we got ready and went to the hotel where my other sister was waiting. Her work place was near the hotel so she went there straight to meet up with us. The joy and excitement I felt was we headed to the hotel told me that this night would be something to remember.
As I entered the hotel, a sudden thrill went through me. I could not help but feel giddy at the thought of eating at a fancy place with my family.
The room was dimly lit and the arrangements of the table were set so that we would not disturb other tables. The chairs looked soft and it made me feel at ease with the place. All around me, people were having light conversations with their family and friends while eating dinner. The aroma of the food engulfed me as my family and I found the table we were going to sit in. After we got settled, we went to get some food from the buffet table.
The aroma of the food was so tempting that I could not resist trying most of them. One of the dishes that I could not help but eat was the “Paella Negra”. Paella Negra with its black sauce, rice, crab and various seafood was like going to heaven. It tasted unlike any other dish that I had before. It was not too salty and I could taste the mixture of ingredients as I took a bite. To top it all off, I had the perfect opportunity to eat another dish that I could kill for – dessert. One of their desserts was crepe with any fruit of your choice. The crepe with apples and bananas topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream slowly melting at the sides was the highlight of my night. It felt so good to eat something so delicious after a long day in school. The mixture of the apples and bananas with the ice cream made it sweet yet not that sugary sweet that makes you sick of the taste.
As the night came to an end, we had to leave the hotel and head for home. So after eating a sumptuous meal, we took one last shot for memory’s sake.
The smiles plastered on my family’s face will always be engraved in my heart as we celebrated this occasion. The way my father and mother seemed so happy that I was happy during my birthday was a moment I will cherish. Also, my siblings showed me the love they have for me by being with me on this day.
As we left for home, I could not bear the thought of this day coming to an end, but as I looked back, I realized that there is no need for me to feel this. I had a wonderful evening spent with my family. I could not have asked for a better evening.

The way my father and mother seemed so happy that I was happy during my birthday was a moment I will cherish. Also, my siblings showed me the love they have for me by being with me on this day.
As we left for home, I could not bear the thought of this day coming to an end, but as I looked back, I realized that there is no need for me to feel this. I had a wonderful evening spent with my family. I could not have asked for a better evening.
I will always have with me the memory of my eighteenth birthday – the joy and excitement I felt in the hotel as we celebrated my newfound adulthood. Truly this event has shown me how special it is to spend those memorable moments in your life with your family.

Process Essay - How To Learn Swimming
Swimming is a skill that can help keep you fit and can be a good exercise for your muscles. You burn many calories when swimming and it can be useful during emergency situations. It can also prevent drowning from happening. Floating, dog paddling and the different swimming techniques are the basic lessons you need to learn in swimming.
The basic lesson swimming institutions teach students to learn how to swim is floating. For you to be able to swim, you need to relax in the water. You cannot let your fear get in the way, or else you would not be able to swim. There are different types of floating that can help you be at ease as your body is submerged in water. The different types of floating include treading, back float, turtle float, jellyfish float and many more in treading, your head is above the water and your legs and arms do the movement to keep you afloat. Your legs perform a kicking motion, while your arms move outwards. Treading is usually done in deep waters. Back float is floating on your back. You lie on your back against the surface of the water and relax. You let the water help you float, instead of resisting it. Turtle float is done with your knees close to your chest and your head is submerged in water. You hug your knees and float in the water. This type of floating can also help you in your breathing exercise. Jellyfish float is similar with turtle float, the only difference is that instead of hugging your knees to your chest; you hold your ankles.
Dog paddling is the first swim stroke taught t children. It was said that humans have the innate ability to swim. The dog paddle evolved from observing the animals in ancient times. Reflective Essay 1
The competencies that I have in reading and writing English are my vocabulary and my ability to comprehend most of the articles that I read. During my spare time, I read pocket books that help me understand and learn new words. Furthermore, in my high school, we used to write essays and book reports about classic novels. Although, there are some areas that I do not excel in. My grammar is not that good and there are times when I do not understand what I read, especially poems. I do not easily get what poems are supposed to relay to the readers. I am also not good in getting the main ideas of articles but after reading it several times I tend to understand it better. My expectation for the Englcom course is that it is going to be difficult. Although it is more on reading and writing, I believe it is not going to be easy. I make mistakes and I hope to improve them through this course. Although it may be difficult, the course seems interesting. I may be able to learn new things from this class and be able to improve my writing skills. I also expect to read new articles/novels that will give me new ideas and help me better understand poems. I believe that this course will be able to help me improve on the areas that I am weak on. Through this course I hope that my English will improve and I will be able to write better essays in the near future. Even though I had English classes in my high school, I believe that by continuing studying English, I will be able to improve. I will be able to improve my English and this can help me in my future. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I need to be able to read, write and speak in English fluently. If I would want to make business transactions with other countries, I would need to learn English so that I would be able to make business with them. Furthermore, learning English will be beneficial to me because I will be able to correct my mistakes and I can be a successful entrepreneur. I will be able to reach my goal, which is to become successful in my career someday.
